70s back to summer eyewear

This summer eyewear brands are placing their bet on mid-sized sunglasses with specific designing on the rims giving them the 70's look flaunted by the likes of yesteryear actor Zeenat Aman in "Dum Maro Dum."

Mid-sized rims seem to be drawing attention more than the others. Rims in red, white and yellow, some embossed with crystals, some with pointy edges, some with butterfly or cupid motif on the arms, are instant h.

"The entire experimentation is focused on the girls' range of glares. Those standard black glasses with both small and over size rims have already bid a goodbye. Women collection is more about colour and embellishments," says Simran, marketing head of Fastrack, which has launched its latest collection of shades.

For women, material of the shades is not that important...shape and colours matter more," says Raunak Seth, Director of Eternity Lifestyles which has been into the retailing of eyewear from past 30 years.

Rose pink is a hot favourite pick amongst the college going young women. Moreover the material has also undergone a transformation for both men and women," adds Seth who has launched a retro look of shades for this season.

Curved and rounded shaped glares in acetate are the bestsellers. But for men, metal aviators still rule the roost," opines Seth.

"For men, fashion is slowly shifting from aviators to wayfarers. Adding colours in a small space like black with yellow, black with red, black with white is in," adds Seth.

Who else can show off better than our very own style icon, Bollywood Saif Ali Khan whose glares are often custom made. His pair of shades with a thin red rim are to die for.

Besides this, Wayfarers are back in style with MTV jockey Raghuram flaunting them in the current season of reality show 'Roadies'.

"Wayfarers which were the trend setters for 1950s are back to be the style this summer season. Aviators, though are still the hot favourite among men," adds Simran.

Salil Chaturvedi of Provogue eyewear says, "It's exciting to see people experimenting with sunglasses. No one's playing safe by going the regular cliched way. Sunglasses are a reflection of one's attitude and so the shape, size and colour are completely out-of-the-box, yet very wearable."

Nobody wears it better than our own Bollywood. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, Kangna Ranaut are the torch bearers when it comes to showcase the latest fashion.

Giving a thumb-ups to Aishwarya's white rimmed shades of Action Replay,Simran says "White rims are really in. In fact, coloured rims like red and amber are fast catching up.

Scandalous J.Lo

Jennifer Lopez's shockingly sheer plunging chiffon Grammy gown (by Versace) put her on the fashion map in 2000 and made international headlines. That was the pivotal moment when she learned the importance of "Shock and Awe" style.

Lately, she's fallen back on her attention-getting antics. Jennifer seems to have developed an addiction to skin-tight catsuits and bizarre bubble skirts, neither of which are very flattering to her figure.

She made the Times Square ball (and quite a few jaws) drop with a sparkly nude catsuit on New Year's Eve. Then she slithered onstage in a black leather Bond-babe catsuit at an Italian music fest. And let's not even bring up that metallic bubble dress at the AMAs.

Did her fashion choices end her music career at Sony? You decide.

The 3 best new handbag trends for spring

With the sun starting to peek through the clouds, we’re all eager to store winter layers and

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

spring into something fresh. And what better way to re-energize your ensemble than with the perfect purse? TODAY style editor and Bobbie.com’s Bobbie Thomas rounds up spring’s biggest bag trends and offers inspiration on how to work them into your wardrobe.

Envelope bags
The smaller shoulder-flap bags of the ’70s have returned with updated designs inspired by the likes of Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Gucci and more. These demure, ladylike companions are overshadowing the oversize “bring the kitchen sink with you” totes and can add a timeless touch to your look. Classic neutrals like gray, beige and brown will be your best investment as they will add polish to casual basics, balance a trendy look, or emphasize the sophistication of a dress or suit. If you can’t kick the overpacked purse habit, don’t worry — you can find structured satchels that offer the same appeal with extra room to boot. And no need to break the bank — you can get in on the trend with many chic and affordable options for less than $100.

Handmade Medium Shoulder Bag, $2,500, Gucci.com; Valentino Rock Stud Satchel, $1,995, Nordstrom.com; Charlie Convertible Messenger Bag, $108, Bcbg.com; Rampage Alana Tote, $108, Endless.com; Leather Portfolio Clutch, $98.62, Asos.com; Sara Flap Bag, $80, Bigbuddha.com; Mudd Flap Bag and Full Grain Leather Bag, $60-$79, Aldoshoes.com; Tan Leather Flap Bag, $69.95, Hm.com; Faux Anaconda Bag, $45, Urbanoutfitters.com; Vintaged Embossed Faux Croc Handbag, $26.80, Forever21.com

White-hot totes
Forget what you may have heard about this hard-to-wear hue; crisp, paper-white purses are making a style statement this season. A bright white bag offers an instant update to almost any outfit, adding a stark contrast against black, a fresh compliment to color or a minimalistic accent to an all-white ensemble. Don’t be afraid to go for texture, as many of today’s hottest whites — inspired by designers including Diane von Furstenberg and Dolce & Gabbana — are showing details such as crochet and lace overlays, intricate weaves, etc. and come in a variety of shapes ranging from drawstring bucket bags to soft duffels and more.

Stephanie Bag, $875, Dvf.com; Miss Sicily Lace bag, $2,095, Dolceandgabanna.com; Steve Madden Mason Perforated satchel & Bwoven bag, $98, Zappos.com; Ruby Crossbody and Pearl Bag, $55-$90, Bigbuddha.com; Fishing Net Bagand On The Button Bag,$54-$68, FrancescasCollections.com; Jessica Simpson Katie satchel, $68, Macys.com; Straw bamboo clutch, $44.90, Thelimited.com; Candie’s Sasha Perforated Crossbody, $15, Kohls.com

Colorful carryalls
From two-tone to blocking and even sporty stripes, bright and bold styles can help infuse a little whimsy into your wardrobe. Handbags by YSL, Fendi and Louis Vuitton have helped to bring these punchy purses front and center this season, and while the designs will perfectly compliment an LBD (little black dress), don’t be afraid to pair them with other spring colors, prints and patterns. For the risk takers, try mixing and matching complimentary shades to create countless fun and flirty fashion possibilities this season.

We want Luxury. Forget the Gap

Consumers are ready for a little luxury. Despite cutting back in other areas, such as dining, they are showing a clear preference for select high-end apparel brands, such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Andrea Meli art and Burberry.

After taking a hit at the height of the recession, sales of luxury goods have rebounded strongly, up 10%-12% last year in the U.S., according to estimates by Telsey Advisory Group, a retail equity research firm. Comparatively, retail sales across the board rose just 6%.

"People are willing to pay a premium on something that delivers on luxury," noted Milton Pedraza, the CEO of the Luxury Institute, which tracks spending among wealthy consumers with a minimum annual income of $150,000. "They will buy fewer but more expensive things. There's a lot more value consciousness."

But with an eye on value, shoppers are also hunting down designer brands at steep discounts, frequenting stores such TJ Maxx and online sale sites such as Gilt Groupe.

Ed Jay, senior vice president of American Express Business Insights, calls this "the barbell effect."

Gucci - Fall Winter 2011/2012 Full Edited Show (Exclusive)

Milan Fashion Week Gucci AW11.jpg

Saying farewell to London, we now turn our attentions to Milan Fashion Week, and helping to kick

off proceedings yesterday was Gucci. In the flash of an eye, Frida Giannini swept the runway in a trail of rich colours including yellow, purple, and jewel tones such as emerald, ruby and turquoise.

This early-gangster-meets-Seventies-bohemian theme was a great choice for Gianni, who looked to Faye Dunaway for inspiration. With nearly every look trimmed by brightly dyed fox fur, there was a definite 1940s feel to pieces, many of which relied heavily on pussy bow ties...

Kate Moss: neither Versace nor Gucci. Chanel keep out!

She is one of the world’s most successful models and would have fashion designers clamouring to create her wedding dress.

But Kate Moss will not be wearing Versace, Gucci or Vera Wang when she walks down the aisle with rock guitarist Jamie Hince this summer.

She has chosen a lesser-known designer to create the dress – herself...

Gucci from catwalk to high street

Gucci is synonymous with glamour and what better decade

for the Italian label to hop in to bed with than the 1970s.

The designer, Frida Giannini, cited fashion photographers

of the era such as Guy Bourdin plus the exoticism of

Marrakech as her inspirations. Alternatively, think Bianca

Jagger at Studio 54 and you'll have it nailed.

A key player in this look is the jumpsuit. The all-in-one has

many guises but none is more louche and downright sexy

than the satin version. This one from Marks & Spencer is

perfect with its tapered leg, cutaway halter neck and

jewel tone, colour blocking.

Slick hair, strong make-up with a high-impact ruby lip and

plenty of gold accessories will complete the glamazon

feel. Plus these Topshop sandals are deliciously similar to

Gucci's. Who needs buckets of cash when you have high-

street know-how?

New York Fashion Week arrives with...

...images of flowers, delicate pastels and intricately painted eggs come to mind when most people think of springtime. For the fashion minded, however, one event stands out: The New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter collections.

The semi-annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week takes place in New York City every February and September. Although the fashion weeks that are hosted in February events showcasing fall clothing lines aren't as big as the shows in September, the collections are no less magnificent.

While many great collections have drawn inspiration from the past, the fashion industry key's to success remains evolution. Moving forward is the driving force behind designs. The Fall/Winter 2010 collections varied as much as the designers' personal styles.

During last year's New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter, which ran from Feb. 11-18, 2010, the iconic Ralph Lauren showed Sherpa-lined jackets with crocheted knit sweaters. A more dainty, autumn-appropriate floral was modeled in full skirt and maxi dress form. Staying true to fall's neutral color scheme, the collection was full of blacks, burgundies, grays and muted greens. Hints of jewel tones and crushed velvet made a cameo appearance...read more on newsrecord.org http://tinyurl.com/4v4kclc
